Management often gives conflicting messages.  For example they say:  "You are an incompetent imbecile and we are going to fire you as soon as we establish a paper trail."  And "Work hard.  The job you are doing is very important to the success of the company."  These can't both be true.  I think we know which of the two they really believe.
